A clamp meter is a practical tool for measuring current without disconnecting a conductor. But when comparing models, you may notice a feature called True RMS.
For some electrical work, True RMS can make a meaningful difference. For other basic measurements, it may not be essential.
So, when do you really need a True RMS clamp meter?
What Is True RMS?
RMS, or Root Mean Square, is a way of representing the effective value of an AC signal.
A conventional average-responding meter generally performs well when measuring clean, sinusoidal AC waveforms. However, many modern electrical devices can produce distorted or non-sinusoidal waveforms.
True RMS meters are designed to measure the effective value of AC signals more accurately when the waveform is not a simple sine wave.
This can matter when troubleshooting modern electrical and electronic equipment.
When Is a True RMS Clamp Meter Useful?
Variable Frequency Drives
VFDs control motor speed by changing the frequency and voltage supplied to a motor. The resulting electrical waveform can be significantly different from a conventional sine wave.
If you regularly work with motor drives or industrial equipment, a True RMS clamp meter can provide more meaningful AC measurements. Some MESTEK models, such as the CM86A and CM88B, also include VFD measurement functions for this type of application.
Switching Power Supplies and Electronic Equipment
Computers, LED lighting, UPS systems, and other electronic equipment often use switching power supplies. These loads can draw current in a non-linear way, producing waveforms that are more difficult for basic meters to measure accurately.
For troubleshooting this type of equipment, True RMS can be useful.
Commercial and Industrial Electrical Systems
If you work with a mixture of motors, drives, power supplies, and other electronic loads, the electrical environment is less likely to consist only of clean sine waves.
A True RMS clamp meter can therefore be a useful general-purpose instrument for electrical troubleshooting.
When Do You Not Necessarily Need True RMS?
Not every electrical measurement requires True RMS.
If you mainly measure relatively clean AC circuits and perform basic electrical checks, a conventional clamp meter may be sufficient for your work.
The important point is that True RMS is not automatically a guarantee of better results in every measurement. The suitability of a clamp meter also depends on its current range, voltage rating, jaw size, accuracy, and the type of electrical system being tested.
Choosing a True RMS Clamp Meter
If you decide that True RMS is useful for your work, look beyond the True RMS label.

Do You Really Need a True RMS Clamp Meter?
If your work involves VFDs, motors, switching power supplies, electronic equipment, or other non-linear loads, True RMS can be a useful feature to have.
If your work mainly involves basic measurements on conventional AC circuits, you may not need to make True RMS the deciding factor.
The best approach is to choose a clamp meter based on your actual applications rather than simply choosing the model with the longest feature list.
